The Five Macro Crises Of Our Times

The Financial, Energy, Political, Moral and Demographic Crises

As America drifts in this direction, ending poverty and redistributing income should be at the top of the national agenda." Charles Derber, Corporation Nation (p. 203)  [There are] "three ways to be influential in American politics: make donations to political parties, establish think tanks, and control media outlets.” Haim Saban, Pro-Israel billionaire and major political contributor, (2009)  Our world has become very complex, and, as a consequence, it is increasingly open to macro crises of huge proportions. Indeed, what makes our time such a dangerous period, I think, is the fact that we are facing simultaneously at least five intractable worldwide crises that it will take years to solve or to outlive. They are a financial crisis that will take at least twenty years to jugulate, an energy crisis  that's looming on the not too far horizon and which threatens the very foundation of the economic prosperity of the last half century, a double-barreled demographic crisis of a magnitude never encountered during the entire history of humankind, a political crisis that is related to the ingrained inability of governments most everywhere to solve society's problems, and, as a general background, a moral crisis that corrupts most institutions and makes them ineffective in promoting the common good. I-The Financial Crisis The misguided experiment with new synthetic financial instruments under the coat of hardly any government regulation is proving to be very disastrous to the world economy.  They led to the near complete collapse of the banking and credit system in the fall of 2008, and are very much instrumental today in destabilizing the euro monetary zone and the European economy, the largest in the world. In fact, these new financial instruments play a central role in pushing down the American and European economies. Indeed, these so called financial “innovations” have turned the world financial sector into a vast casino in which international bankers and speculators reign supreme. One may ask how was it possible to allow a casino-like financial capitalism to develop, especially after the hard lessons learned during the Great Depression of the 1930s? When President Bill Clinton accepted the Republican proposal (GLBA) to gut the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act, that had regulated investment and commercial banking until then, he had no idea that his simple signature would herald, less than ten years later, a financial crisis of historical proportions. With this deregulation move and with the dismantling of other financial safeguards that had been in place for a long time, some since the financial panic of 1907, international bankers were allowed to merge their investment banking and commercial banking activities and discard many traditional banking rules. They adopted the new model of asset securitization, through which large banks de facto ceased being banks to become brokers, that is they ceased being lenders to become sellers of the sophisticated but untested new synthetic financial securities. Their names are now well known if not yet fully understood by many: Asset-based security (ABS), "Collateralized Bond Obligations" (CBOs), "Collateralized Debt Obligations" (CDOs), and credit default swaps (CDS). — In financier Warren Buffett's words, they turned out to be true financial weapons of mass destruction, and they are still doing their ravages, because politicians have as yet refused to rein them in and put an end to excessive financial speculation. II- The Energy Crisis Economic prosperity and population growth over the last half century have been sustained in large part by the access to relatively cheap energy and by an elevated capacity to produce food. But, the age of cheap energy is about to end, and this basic source of economic growth will disappear, unless some untapped cheap oil discoveries come to the rescue. If the age of cheap energy is coming to an end, can the world economy continue to support a fast rate of population growth? This is unlikely. Already, we observe a reemergence of hegemonic wars for oil and resources in some parts of the world that can be explained, at least partly, by the looming energy crisis. Not surprisingly, the United States, with less than five percent of the world population while consuming about 25 percent of the daily world oil output, is at the center of this crisis. Nobody can deny that oil access under American control played an important role in the Bush-Cheney decision to launch an unprovoked war against Iraq in the spring of 2003. Similarly, the recent Anglo-French involvement in Libya, under the cover of NATO, had something to do with Libyan oil riches. In a globalized and shrinking world, geopolitics and the approaching energy crisis are closely intertwined. III- The Demographic Crisis The world is about to have a population of 7-billion to feed and equip with the necessities of life. And a larger share of that population is going to be older as the 21st century unfolds. Indeed, between now and 2050, the share of the population aged 60 and over is projected to increase in nearly every country in the world. All countries, both developed and developing, will be affected by this demographic shift, although in different ways. In the developing world, where fertility rates are still high (although declining), the crisis will come from too many young people without employment and too many old people living in poverty. In advanced economies, the crisis will come from an onslaught of older citizens requiring more health care and social services at a time of economic stagnation and fiscal tightening. The aging of the population will have a major impact on a society. For one, it will profoundly affect the economy during the next two decades, as the large contingent of baby boomers (USA: those born between 1946 and 1964; in Canada: 1946-1966) enters retirement and as mortality among the elderly continues to decline. In the U.S., 75 million people and close to one quarter of the population are baby boomers. The retirement of baby boomers at the rate of between 3 and 4 million persons each year will redefine the basic economic structure and will create new economic, social and fiscal challenges. Currently, in the United States, there are 3.3 workers to support each retiree, but by 2030, less than twenty years from now, this number will fall to only two. Consider also that twenty percent of Americans will be over 65 by 2050, up from 12 percent in 2005. As the consequence of the graying of America, payroll taxes and other taxes may have to be raised, which in turn will exert an important drag on economic growth. With so many retirees as a percentage of the working population, I would not be surprised to see a serious pension crisis developing in the coming years. It could arise either through uncontrolled inflation or through a general decline of the real return on capital. Either way, an erosion of pension income could ensue. Secondly, it can be expected that some basic industries, such as manufacturing, will contract while those other industries related to health care and social services, like medicine and senior care, are destined to expand. The overall saving rate is also bound to decline, thus diminishing the pool of financing available to support new productive investments. The result will be an economy that will become, even more than today, a service-based economy and also a moreknowledge-based economy rather than being primarily a goods producing economy. With such a structural shift, unless per-worker productivity were to pick up substantially, considering that such productivity is lower in service industries, economic growth is bound to suffer and taper off. In Canada, for instance, average annual economic growth has registered 2.8 percent, between 1977 and 2010, but it is expected that between 2011 and 2086, mainly due to demographic shifts, economic growth could slowdown to a meagre annual average of 1.6 percent. A slower economic growth means less government revenue at a time when demand for public services can be expected to increase. That is why governments should prepare, fiscally speaking, for the expected onslaught of older citizens requiring more health care in the not too distant future. IV-The Political Crisis In many democratic countries, government has become the near exclusive tool of powerful private interests who use it at will to promote their narrow agendas. The cause is well known—the need to have tons of money to have access to the media, especially the electronic media, to get exposure. The result is everywhere to be seen: The people end up with the best politicians that money can buy. The source of embedded corruption in politics is the overwhelming influence of money in politics. In the United States, things went from bad to worse on Thursday January 21, 2010, when the U.S. Supreme Court took upon itself to profoundly change the U.S. Constitution and American democracy in ruling that legal entities, such as corporations and labor unions, have the same purely personal rights to free speech as living individuals and can therefore use as much money as they wish to elect public officials of their liking. In doing so, the U.S. Supreme Court severely devalued the individual's right to vote and made sure that the percentage of people who will bother to vote in the future will keep declining. Mind you, voter participation during the mid-term 2010 U.S. federal election, for example, was a meager 42 percent of registered voters. When a majority of the people don't even bother to vote, democracy is morbidly sick. Even though voter turnout is generally higher in American presidential elections than for midterm contests, it was nevertheless as low as 49.1 percent in 1996 (Bill Clinton vs Bob Dole) after it had reached a high of 60.1 percent during the 1960 presidential election between Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy. A question must be raised: Who profits the most when democracy dies? V- The Moral Crisis Our times mark the triumph of Machiavellism, i.e. of the corrosive ideology that politics and business should not adhere to any moral principles but should only be guided by narrow political interests and by the ruthless pursuit of profits. In this endeavor, the only principle that counts is the one that says that “the end justifies the means” and that craft, deceit and greed are OK in the pursuit of political power or of economic resources. —It is against this very destructive ideology that I wrote my book “The Code for Global Ethics”. I have the deep conviction that many of our other macro crises are the result of this moral vacuum. If we go back in history, we see that the big financial crises of the past, those of 1873-1880 and 1929-1939 for example, had pretty much the same type of causes as the one we are experiencing today: They were basically caused by a general collapse of public and private basic morality among a very small elite that pushed its exploitation of public institutions to the breaking limit. For such a small elite, there comes a time when all means justify the supreme goal of enriching itself at the expense of the rest of society. All combines, tricks and schemes become acceptable and justified by pious ideological slogans such as “the market always knows best”, the new “wealth (no matter how acquired) will trickle down”, or, for the more delusional ones among them, “God is placing all that money in my hands, therefore, I must be doing some good”! When that frame of mind takes hold, a decline of civilization can be feared. Unfortunately, that's where we stand today. The U.S. Military's Plan For London-Like Riots

With British Prime Minister David Cameron authorizing the use of rubber bullets and water canons in wake of the turbulent London riots spreading through Britain, questions have been raised about how authorities in the U.S. would respond to a similar domestic disturbance threatening the nation's stability. According to National Journal's White House correspondent Marc Ambinder the U.S. already has a game plan in place. "If what happened in London ever happened in the US, the military has plans -- CONPLAN 3501 and 3502 -- to suppress the 'insurrection,' he tweeted. The mysterious reference to a numbered military plan generated a flurry of interest on Twitter as NPR host Michele Norris shot back:"I want to know more about the military's plan to suppress any potential 'insurrection.'-- CONPLAN 3501 and 3502????"

Interestingly, the CONPLAN (which stands for an "operation plan in concept format" at the Pentagon) Ambinder referenced is a popular subject among conspiracy theorists and critics of martial law. According to the public policy organization GlobalSecurity.org, CONPLAN 3502 is the U.S. military's plan for assisting state and local authorities in the event of a riot or major civil disturbance: "Tasks performed by military forces may include joint patrolling with law enforcement officers; securing key buildings, memorials, intersections and bridges; and acting as a quick reaction force." 

It derives its constitutional backing from Article I, Section 8 stating that "Congress shall have power... to provide for calling forth the Militia to execute laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections, and repel Invasions" and is rumored to have been activated during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, during the 1999 Seattle WTO riots and during the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. But, according to Nate Jones at the National Security Archive, "because historic Garden Plot activity was classified and current activity likely remains so, it is difficult to discern exactly how many times Garden Plot was evoked." What jarred Jones upon looking at internal military documents, were the "indicators of potential violence," which were especially racially oriented:

According to Global Security, the federal government's power to control civil disturbances was increased in 1970. Here's an outline of what that involved:

375,000 National Guardsmen and 14,000 Army Reservists had been trained in riot control as the year closed. The Army National Guard conducted, at the expense of regular training, sixteen hours of refresher civil disturbance training. Some states also carried out civil disturbance command post exercises in conjunction with local and state civil authorities. The Army Reserve had three infantry brigades which were part of the federal military contingency force for the control of civil disturbances. These units also conducted sixteen hours of refresher civil disturbance training at the expense of primary training. This additional responsibility of the Reserve Components called for their immediate availability in times of natural disasters, civil disturbances, and other emergencies.

American (Real) Exceptionalism

A majority of Americans believe America is an “exceptional” nation and “a shining beacon of democracy and hope to a dark world”.  But, reliable and unbiased evidence shows that real America is an unequal society, oppressive, undemocratic and a violent imperialist power.


Inequality and Poverty


A report released on 20 October 2008 by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) revealed that the U.S. has “the highest inequality level and poverty rate across the OECD, Mexico and Turkey excepted. Since 2000, income inequality has increased rapidly, continuing a long-term trend that goes back to the 1970s”. All Western Europe’s OECD states, along with Japan, South Korea, Canada and Australia have recorded better figures than the U.S., as did central and eastern European states, including Poland and Hungary. [1].
The OECD Report shows that,

“Rich households in America have been leaving both middle and poorer income groups behind. This has happened in many countries, but nowhere has this trend been so stark as in the United States. The average income of the richest 10 percent is US$93,000 in purchasing power parities, the highest level in the OECD. However, the poorest 10% of the US citizens have an income of US$5,800 per year—about 20% lower than the average for OECD countries”.

Over the past 30 years, the richest 1% of U.S. population, the ruling class, has tripled its share of the income pie, mainly through tax cuts and financial deregulation. If their income had increased only at the pace of American productivity (80%), they would be taking about a trillion dollar less out of U.S. economy. According to a study by Jon Bakija, Adam Cole and Bradley Heim, the U.S. is truly exceptional in that it is on its way to becoming the most unequal society on the planet, if not already the most an equal society. [2].


In 2009, there are 43.6 million Americans living in poverty, one in every seven Americans. The U.S. Census Bureau reported in September 2010 that, there were 8.8 million families living in poverty in 2009, including one child in every five. According to a study by the U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA), some 14.7 percent of American households had serious feeding problems. For over a third of the affected households, the situation is particularly bleak. This means, 6.8 million or about 5.7 percent of all U.S. households, is in serious food insecurity, according to the study. At least one member of each household was forced to eat less or to switch their eating habits. Around one million children were affected. [3].


A report by UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre in Italy revealed that, although the U.S. is still considered (by economists) as the wealthiest country in the world, it has the highest incidences of child poverty among industrialised nations. The Report shows that, factors such as, poor education, structural racism against minorities and women, limited job opportunities and declining health status contribute greatly to child poverty and hunger among the marginalised and forgotten Americans. [4].


Healthcare


The U.S. is exceptional among industrialised and many non-industrialised nations not only in having by far the most expensive healthcare system but healthcare in the U.S. is the least accessible. The U.S. is one of the few countries in the world that does not provide universal health care for children and pregnant women. There are more than 60 million uninsured Americans. The U.S. has 59 million people medically uninsured; 132 million without dental insurance; 60 million without paid sick leave. Furthermore, infant mortality, low birth weight, and child deaths under five are ranked among the highest in the U.S. as compared to Western nations and Japan. Among OECD countries, only Mexico, Turkey and the Slovak Republic have high infant mortality than the U.S. Life expectancy in the U.S. has fallen behind compared to other nations. A recent report by the University of Washington found that life expectancy, particularly for women, has fallen in 860 counties across the U.S. [5].


Violence and Militarism


No other nation perpetuates violence in the same way as the U.S. does. It has a complete monopoly on violence. The U.S. is rightly condemned by a majority of the world’s populations as the greatest threat to world peace and human survival. At home, the U.S. is the world leading nation of organised violence. “The culture of organised violence is one of the most powerful forces shaping American society, extending deeply into every aspect of American life”, writes Henry Giroux, a professor of Cultural Studies at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.


In militarism, the U.S. is exceptional. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the U.S. spends more than the next 45 highest spending countries in the world combined or 48 percent of the world's total military spending. [6]. About 50 percent of U.S. discretionary spending goes for the Pentagon. A massive transfer of wealth into the hands of a few while the American people lack sufficient jobs, healthcare, education, housing, retirement security.


As an imperialist militarised power in pursuit of world hegemony, the U.S. is a serial violator of international law, and international human rights law. Since the end of World War Two, the U.S. government (the Zionist ruling class) has embarked on a foreign policy characterised by wars of aggression and illegal military invasions and occupation of defenceless nations. Millions of innocent civilians have been killed and many more millions have been wounded by U.S. forces. From Vietnam to Iraq, Yugoslavia to Afghanistan and Pakistan and Yugoslavia, the destruction caused by U.S. aggression was truly barbaric. Furthermore, to enforce its murderous occupation of defenceless nations, the local populations are subjected to brutal treatment, including night raids and deprivation of liberty. Human rights abuses including, kidnapping, imprisonment, sexual violence, torture and executions were parts of U.S. military occupation.


Human Rights


The U.S. government is addicted to bragging about human rights violations in other countries, knowing full well that the U.S. is a bastion of human rights violations. Outside the U.S., the U.S. record on human rights is criminal. The 1990-2033 U.S.-Britain engineered and enforced genocidal sanctions against Iraq that killed at least 2 million innocent Iraqis, including 600,000 infant under the age of 5 is a case in point of U.S. violations of human right in other nations. The sanctions were the prelude to the 2003 war of aggression that ruined an advanced nation.


In the U.S., the U.S. justice system is one of the most corrupt and callous in the world. It is a brutal system that openly denies justice to the poor and venerable, including, African Americans, people from minorities and Muslims. In its annual report on human rights, the New York-based Human Rights Watch condemns the U.S. on its treatment of Americans of racial and ethnic minorities. For example, African American males are incarcerated at a rate more than six times that of white non-Hispanic males and 2.6 times that of Hispanic males. In 2009, 1 in 10 African American males aged 25-29 was in prison or jail compared to 1 in 64 white males and 1 in 25 Hispanic males. That is more than two-thirds of prisoner incarcerated are African and Hispanic Americans.  While African Americans constitute only about 13 percent of the U.S. population, they constitute 33.6 percent of drug arrests, 44 percent of state convictions on drug felonies, and 37 percent of people sent to state prison on drug charges. The Report shows that African Americans and white Americans engage in drug offenses at equivalent rates. Furthermore, the U.S. imprisons three times more women than any other nation in the world. There were 123 female prisoners per 100,000 women of the U.S. female population, compared to 1,348 male prisoners per 100,000 men.


According to National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD), the U.S. incarcerates the largest number of people in the world at a rate four times the world average. More than 2.3 million people are incarcerated, or 25% of the world’s prison population, the majority are African and Hispanic Americans. Most prisoners are locked in a network of super-maximum security prisons, known as the Prison-industrial Complex or Gulags, where prisoners are subjected to brutal torture and human rights abuses. As of this writing, prisoners in California prisons have been on hunger strike for three weeks to protest against torture and inhumane treatments. [7]. Furthermore, since 2001, the U.S. has extended its Gulags of torture and human rights abuse centres as far as Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, Abu Ghraib in Iraq and Bagram in Afghanistan.


Democracy


While the U.S. claims to be a democracy and pretend to promote democracy around the world, the U.S. is not a democracy, but a plutocracy. The U.S. is ruled by a wealthy ruling class for the sole benefit of the minority rich Americans.  The American people are manipulated and completely excluded from political influence and decisions. The people are reduced to helpless spectators. They have been indoctrinated “not to get involved in politics” and to mind their own business. 


Elections are used to con the people. Indeed, the U.S. has one of the lowest voter participation rates. Former U.S. president George W. Bush was an illegitimate president for two terms having arrived at the White House through well-known rigged elections. The so-called, two-party system is a fraud. It is a one-party with two branches system that serves corporate interest. It doesn’t matter who occupy the White House, the country is controlled by wealthy corporations and individuals.


Furthermore, the so-called “promotion of democracy” around the world by the U.S. government and its agencies is nothing more and nothing less than the promotion of ruling elites subservient to U.S. diktats, mostly brutal dictators serving U.S. interests. In short, the U.S. promotes murderous dictators and has a shameful disdain for democracy. The U.S. role in subverting and undermining democracy around the world is outright criminal.


Freedom


In personal freedom, as David Morris, an author and the co-founder of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance writes; “To American exceptionalists, freedom means being able to do what you want unencumbered by obligations to your fellow citizens. It is a definition of freedom the rest of the world finds bewildering.  Can it be, they ask, that the quintessential expression of American freedom is low or no taxes and the right to carry a loaded gun into a bar?” People who question or doubt the official story of 9/11 are demonised and depicted as anti-American “conspirators”. The event was used as an opportunity for the U.S. government to crackdown on dissent, including students’ protest and academic freedom. Furthermore, in press freedom, the U.S. ranked 20th by Reporters without Borders and 24th by Freedom House. So, the U.S. is not exceptional as Americans claim.


In conclusion, “Among industrialized nations, the United States is at or near the worst ranking in employment, democracy, wellbeing, food security, life expectancy, education, and percentage of the population in prison, but right at the top in military spending whether measured per capita or as a percentage of GDP or in absolute terms”, writes American author, David Swanson.


So the U.S is not an “exceptional” nation. American “Exceptionalism” is false propaganda used to promote ugly nationalism and rally Americans behind America’s imperialist wars and incite Americans against each other. If the U.S. indeed aspires to be “exceptional” nation, it will have to reinvent itself. A complete collapse of the current U.S. system will benefit not only the American people, but the survival of the planet and humanity.

The Waves Of Revolution Have Had Profound Effects Transforming Possibilities Into Reality.

In mid-February, the week after Hosni Mubarak was driven from office by the Egyptian Revolution, unprecedented demonstrations erupted in the state of Wisconsin opposing the efforts of the newly elected Republican governor to destroy the organising power of public employee unions. Although the specific causes were significantly different, the underlying logic of the people rising up against powerful anti-democratic elites made for more than just a superficial resemblance between Tahrir Square in Cairo, and the capitol building and its environs in Madison, Wisconsin.

They were unique, yet related events, like the differing national expressions of waves of protest and revolution that swept Europe in 1848, or that wrapped around the world in 1968. These recurrent world-historical waves represent a prolonged struggle to realise a more just, egalitarian world - a yearning that crosses all manner of cultural boundaries, though it finds unique expression wherever it arises. 

The pattern of these past waves was similar. Initially, an invigorating sense of unity in striving against the dead hand of the past brought together many different groups accustomed to seeing themselves as distinct.  But within a few weeks or months, conservative forces counter-mobilised and found ways to play different groups off against one another, as the initial sense of unity faded in the face of difficult nuts-and-bolts questions of how to build something new. 

Yet, despite the apparent defeat of these waves of revolution, they had profound effects, altering the very sense of the possible - even if it wasn't immediately obvious how to make the possible into the real. For example, demonstrations on both sides of the Iron Curtain in 1968 foreshadowed the decades-long development of movements that helped bring the Cold War to a peaceful end. The Western European peace movement and the Eastern European civil society movement gave significant support to one another, starting simply with their very existence and shared inspiration. Movements for the environment, gender equality and human rights also came to span the globe in the decades following 1968, eventually even gaining conservative support for some version of their aspirations.

The story of 1848 was similar. When Otto von Bismarck - one of Europe's leading conservatives of the 19th century - became the architect of Germany's welfare state in the 1880s, he did it in part to co-opt support for the socialist-oriented Social Democratic Party. Yet, that very act of co-option was itself an acknowledgment of how 1848 had profoundly changed the world.

The current wave of revolutionary protest, intensely focused in the Arab world, but which echoes from Iran to Spain to the US, shows signs of similar dynamics, though they play out very differently in different situations. One crucial difference from 1848 and 1968 is the role of social media, which gives bottom-up egalitarians a better footing for sustained organising. It remains to be seen how effective this will prove to be, but at the very least there is a vastly increased potential to sustain a broadly-shared sense of what a very different world could look like.

The Egyptian "Facebook Generation" was able to drive events in January and February, drawing everyone else along with them - even including the army. But even as those events were unfolding, it was well understood that getting rid of Mubarak and building something new were two very different things - as the late May demonstration in Tahrir Square reminded us again.

Things are very different in and around the Euro-US economic core, and the reason for that largely hinges on how the draconian practices of neo-liberal economics - forced onto the global south in the 1980s and 1990s - have finally come home to roost in the neo-imperial heartland.

Both the Egyptian Revolution and its Wisconsin echo resulted, to different degrees, from the catastrophic failure of the global neo-liberal order in the financial crisis of late 2008, and the followup efforts to save those responsible for the crash, rather than those victimised by it. The same is also true of Tunisia, birthplace of the Arab Spring, as well as in Spain, where the "Real Democracy Now!" movement has brought strikingly similar mass demonstrations onto the European continent. 

Of course there are many more contributing causes for the Arab Spring - the story is set simpler in the West. But the explosion of Arab Spring can be seen as a more compressed and complicated version of Latin America's decade-long realignment away from neo-liberalism and US hegemony. 

The Neo-Liberal Backstory
   
In order to better understand how Spain and Wisconsin differ from Egypt and Tunisia, we need to reflect on the decades-long struggle between neo-liberalism and welfare-state economics around the globe. That's because the financial crash was a virtually inevitable outcome of decades-long practices preceding it, among them, the spread of the neo-liberal "Washington Consensus" that reordered the world economy after the collapse of the original Bretton Woods system amid the twin oil shocks of the 1970s. 

That system, constructed following the Great Depression and World War II, had recognised the necessity for elites to accept the democratically popular welfare state to address social needs that the market had failed to meet during the 1930s, and which helped pave the way for war. Yet, it was primarily a system for maintaining Euro-US hegemony. When Iran tried to nationalise its oil in 1953 and Guatemala tried to establish its own New Deal-style welfare state in 1954, CIA operations were used to overthrow both democratically elected governments and replace them with dictatorships, in order to "defend freedom" as defined by the US during the Cold War. 

Still, more modest forms of state welfare - food subsidies, public education and health programs et cetera - were accepted as normal costs of limiting mass unrest throughout "the Third World", as it was then called. But all this changed with the shift to the neo-liberal order that began in the 1970s. As explained in the 1988 book, The Debt Squads, by Sue Branford and Bernardo Kucinski: "The industrial centre transferred the oil bill to the periphery through dollar inflation, the deepening of the recession, and an increase in interest rates." 

This in turn established the pre-conditions for imposing increasingly severe "structural adjustment policies" throughout the 1980s, primarily through the IMF and the World Bank, forcing countries throughout the global south to slash social investments and adopt neo-liberal economic policies. A pattern that has finally come hit home in the US itself, as Washington turned its back on efforts to restore normal levels of employment, and fixated on destroying America's welfare state - ostensibly in order to save it. Similar pressures are at work in Europe as well, with the European periphery - Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland - facing the most severe attacks.

In 2001, the Center for Economic Policy Research published a report: "The Scorecard on Globalization 1980-2000: Twenty Years of Diminished Progress." It analysed data on economic growth and various social indicators - life expectancy, mortality among infants, children, and adults, literacy, and education - grouping the countries by income quintile. It found that: "For economic growth and almost all of the other indicators, the last 20 years have shown a very clear decline in progress as compared with the previous two decades." 
   
A follow-up report in 2005 reached similar conclusions, comparing the previous 25 years to the 20 years before that. But a third report issued earlier this year showed that things had actually improved over the past decade. "For all except the top quintile of countries – ie for the vast majority of low- and middle-income countries, there was a sharp rebound to the growth rates of the 1960-1980 period during 2000-2010." The report cited widespread rejection of failed neo-liberal policies as one reason for the turnaround. IMF influence rebounded somewhat after the world economic downturn, but most of its influence was "in Europe, especially Eastern Europe and the weaker Eurozone countries (Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and Greece)," rather than Asia, Latin America and Africa - regions of the world that have recovered more rapidly than Europe and the US, though there are obvious exceptions, and inequalities within countries, as seen in Tunisia and Egypt, for example.
   
Underlying these particulars is a perpetual clash between the ideological promise of free market rhetoric, and the recurrent reality of oligopolies, oligarchs, crony capitalists and the like who manage to thrive, even dominate, in the name of freedom. First Britain, then the US, have dominated the world for two centuries under this peculiar banner of "freedom" that gives license to the most predatory forms of capitalism. 

Abandoning The Abandoners?
   
Throughout the world, but especially in Europe and the US , so-called "left" parties have largely accepted the neo-liberal rhetoric over the past two decades, even while maintaining a theoretical commitment to social and economic justice to distinguish themselves from parties of the right. This is why Spain saw massive demonstrations against the policies of the "socialist" government they had previously helped elect. It's also why more than a million voters stayed at home, allowing massive conservative gains in the recent elections - a phenomena quite similar to that which happened in the US in November.
   
The situation in the US is more complicated than in Spain, because many state-level Democrats - particularly in states such as Wisconsin - remain much more closely aligned with their electoral base. But it was remarkable how relatively little attention national Democrats paid to the massive Wisconsin uprising against Republican attempts to break public unions. National Republicans were far more attentive, because their state and federal policies were much more closely aligned. 
   
This was seen again following a special election in New York, where Democrat Kathy Hochul won in an overwhelmingly Republican district, capitalising on the Republican House vote for the "Ryan Plan" to end Medicare as a social insurance program. Some commentators immediately noted that close to half the Republican House seats could be in play in 2012 - roughly four times the number needed for Democrats to re-take the majority.
   
But since then, President Obama and other Democrats have blurred the razor-sharp distinction Hochul drew by prominently discussing so-called "entitlement reform" with Republicans who continue to push the Ryan Plan. Any such compromise will seriously blunt any attacks on Republicans, while alienating their own base, as happened with the Spanish Socialists.
   
While much of the Arab world now clearly sees Obama siding against the forces of progressive change, particularly on the issue of Palestine, Americans remain remarkably confused, partly due to the depth of right-wing hatred. Even after the release of Obama's long-form birth certificate, a new poll of Iowa Republicans found that a majority of Republicans still aren't convinced Obama is a natural-born citizen - legally entitled to be president. With over-the-top opposition, it's difficult for a relatively disengaged public to see Obama as anything other than the complete opposite of those attacking him, even though his free-market ideology makes them remarkable similar. 
   
Demonstrations such as those in Wisconsin can change this, however. They not only grab people's attention, and provide information about what politicians stand for, they help make politics matter to people. They draw lines in the sand. So far, Obama's response has been to stay away, to avoid being forced to make his position clear. He also tried to do this with the Arab world in his recent speech responding to the Arab Spring. But the Arab world is not so easily fooled.
   
Obama, however, is just one political figure, reflecting the more general state of US politics - particularly elite opinion and major economic interests. His ambivalence is, in this sense, an expression of America's fading power. Obama's belated attempts to play catch-up with the Arab Spring are but one facet of a more general loss of previous dominance.
   
But the true revolution is not to replace US power with another, similar false prophet of "freedom" defined by the marketplace alone. The true revolution is to make the marketplace the servant of humanity's dreams, rather than their master. This is the cause that Mohamed Bouazizi sacrificed his life for. It is the reason that his spirit lives, not just in Tunisia, but across the Arab world and around the entire globe - even in Madison, Wisconsin. 
   
Not yet in Washington, DC, perhaps. But if 1848 and 1968 are any guide, that could certainly change within a decade or two. It could change much faster if social media make as big a difference as some believe they might.

Writers and textbook publishers of American history have generally omitted or glossed over historic accounts of genocide and inhumane treatment of American Indian populations.

After all, the mythology of the American Revolution, declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights is a national story of great significance to the way the United States views itself.

The United States of America was founded on the fundamental principle of freedom of religion.

America's Founding Fathers believed that religious freedom and a strong democratic system were inseparable - but ONLY for Christians.

The American Indians worshiped the Earth instead of Jesus Christ, and according to an interpretation of the Bible, they had no soul.

Therefore, according to an interpretation of the bible by Christian leaders of the 19th century, including distinguished theologians and scholars, the Native Americans could be slaughtered, along with other creatures, so we can get a hamburger for a dollar.

"The only good Indian is a dead Indian" was the battle cry as we let nothing stand in the way of our Manifest Destiny.

Actually, the Indians presented other problems for the "white man" givers.

American Indians held a special knowledge of the land and its inhabitants and believed they were only a small part of the whole circle of life and that each part of creation played a significant role in the contentment and survival of the other.

They accepted the divine idea that all things were equal and no animal, including man, held dominion over other parts of creation.

"Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" is considered to be one of the most choice harvest and thanksgiving hymns in all of the hymnals of Christian singing.

The hymn writer, Henry "Dean" Alford, is regarded as a gifted, Christian leader of the 19th century, a distinguished theologian and scholar.

The Indians were not violent savage people as they would make you think in a lot of American History books and schools. The Indians were those that believed in Nature and protection of animals and other people.
In other words, they worshiped the Earth instead of Jesus and therefore could not have a soul.

The Indians were amazing in many ways. They did not kill just to be killing or kill for lands and power as the USA does. They were brave warriors that fought hard to try to keep their families safe and worked together to share and provide food, clothing and shelter to each other.

Now, maybe we see why some more peaceful countries do not celebrate America's Thanksgiving Day. I myself am always sad on Thanksgiving when I think of what has been done and wonder what it would have been like if not for the sad slaughter of the beautiful Indians.

Now, our America has people killing each other for money and no reason at all on a daily basis. People stealing from each other, homeless people that few seem to try to really help.

The world is nothing like it should be, and nothing like what it was like, when the Indians lived freely and cared for the lands and each other. The USA takes over lands from others and steals their resources still while telling lies and spreading American hate.

Is this what we really have become and really want to show our children? Look at your news and media then look to other countries and translate their news. Find the facts on everything before you judge people or agree with slaughter of people anywhere.

The USA has taken many lives for no reason and it breaks my heart and gives me great shame to say that I am of the USA. Still to this day I can not stand to see their flags fly for it breaks my heart and reminds me of past and present events."

Peaceful countries do not celebrate Thanksgiving.

American Indians, also known as the People of the Land, traditionally and historically believed, humans were created to be caretakers of the garden -- Mother Earth. They held all things of creation sacred and respected Nature.

Authoritarian globalism, not terrorism, is the biggest threat America and the Western world faces. Terrorism is an invented distraction to keep the police and military guards occupied, and a government trick whose purpose is to scare the people into giving up their natural rights and accept the total government takeover of their lives and society.

When we read that nations like Libya and Iran are rogue regimes, which are regimes that pose a threat to the lawless international banking establishment, we should remember that America was a revolutionary nation and a rogue regime of its own day in the eyes of the financial tyrants. Back when America was a free and independent nation and not a mercenary nation for the bloodsucking global private central bankers it did not start large wars or slander other nations. But those days were over when the private Federal Reserve Bank was established in 1913. Soon after America became a puppet for the criminal internationalist bankers and oligarchs, and began to lose its soul.

Nearly a century after the creation of the monstrous Fed, America is on the verge of starting a new world war in the Middle East to protect the interests of its global oligarchical masters. Regimes that are not subservient to the lawless international banking establishment have to be eliminated and destroyed.

The road to World War III and the centralized global government that is being designed to take shape after the war is over has been paved with the blood of innocent Americans who were murdered on September 11, 2001 by the tricksters and traitors in the United States government.

The September 11 attacks made clear three facts: the total loss of representative and lawful government, the planned destruction of America’s constitutional republic, and the beginning of a new dictatorial order based on the total subversion of civil society to an Orwellian world state controlled and owned by the global private banking system and the monopolistic corporations that profit from this unfair system.

There is a globalist war against America, but the weapons are fear, propaganda, and disinformation, not bombs and cruise missiles. The political use of state terrorism and fear against the American people by the political, financial and military establishment in Washington means that the hijacked U.S. government is afraid of the American people. The rulers in Washington have not only betrayed the interests of the American people, but they are waging a full-scale war against the American people and against the constitutional institutions of America.

The English essayist William Hazlitt said that in times of tyranny the interests of the people and the interests of the government are separated and the government by nature becomes the main enemy of the people. Hazlitt:

That Government is instituted for the benefit of the governed, there can be little doubt; but the interests of the Government (when once it becomes absolute and independent of the people) must be directly at variance with those of the governed. The interests of the one are common and equal rights: of the other, exclusive and invidious privileges. (Hazlitt: “What Is The People” from ‘The Fight and Other Writings’; pg. 367).

Whenever the people are betrayed, robbed and murdered by their political leaders there is a need for a revolution. Putting off the inevitable solution to tyranny only makes the correction more painful and the suffering of the people more extreme. The terror of change is hard to overcome but survival depends on it. If the people do not act quickly and aggressively to recover their freedoms and retake their government then they will be destroyed by their political overlords. We are seeing this in America. The country is being deliberately brought down to its knees. A controlled demolition and collapse of America’s constitutional government and American society is under away.

II. The Deliberate Disintegration and Destruction of America: The Eight Phases of America’s Controlled Collapse

Below I will briefly list the eight phases of America’s controlled collapse and disintegration and the five fronts in the war against America. Some of these phases have already been completed but not all may come to fruition if the American people are informed of the threats to their liberty, life, and country by the hijacked federal government and if they collectively resist their enslavement. The same applies for the people of Canada, England, Australia, and other Western countries.

Phase One: Militarizing The Police And Turning The Police Against The People

In the beginning of the 1970s, after the Civil Rights movement achieved victories for the people, the U.S. government began infringing on the civil rights of the people all over again, and this time it was done under the cover of the “War on Drugs.” This war is not a faithful and honest war but a political war that was deliberately designed to take away the liberties of the American people, mostly black people, and unjustly imprison them in order to raise profits for a new prison industry.

Through the false and illegal war on drugs the police of every state has been brainwashed, militarized, brought under federal control, and received billions of dollars to chase around drug addicts and intimidate poor people. Naturally, this has created hostility between the people and the police. The police is seen as an occupying army on American streets which is an accurate representation because the government that they work for and defend has been hijacked and taken over by criminal bankers and globalist oligarchs.

Phase Two: Mercenary-Military Takeover of America’s Constitutional Government Through The CIA and Military-Industrial Complex

The biggest lie that the U.S. government tells the American people is this one: We work for you. Nothing could be more false. The federal government works for the American people today in the same way that the Soviet Union worked for the American people during the Cold War. The truth is that America’s chief political representatives and leaders are murderers and state terrorists, not protectors of America and the U.S. constitution. They are enemies of the public order and the common good of all.

Ever since President John F. Kennedy was murdered by the CIA the American government has not worked for the interests of the American people, but for a fascist clique and politically connected war racketeers who operate the CIA and the military-industrial complex. President Harry S. Truman correctly referred to the CIA as the “American Gestapo.” It is led by anti-American traitors and war criminals who would prefer America to be a dictatorship than a free society.

Phase Three: The Complete Banking Takeover and Financial Rape of America

By now most people realize that the big banks on Wall Street robbed America and fleeced the American people. This phase speaks for itself. Professor Peter Dale Scott and others have written about the plan by Dick Cheney and the treasonous faction in the U.S. government to go ahead with Continuity of Government plans. Phase Five: Stage False Flag Attacks To Increase The Power of The Government and Frighten The People

The tactic of false flag operations is a no-brainer if you’re a tyrant. And it is self-explanatory so I won’t go into much detail. Phase Six: The Criminalization of Patriotism and Dissent

Alex Jones has talked about the fact that the U.S. terror state is now demonizing and targeting people inside America. The myth of the “White Al-Qaeda” is now being spread in the U.S. media in anticipation for future attacks against political resisters. The American white man is being called a domestic terrorist, a racist, and an extremist for refusing to submit to the criminal government in Washington. Expressing patriotism in ways other than supporting the troops and being informed about the Constitution is viewed as a threat to the treasonous establishment in D.C.

Phase Seven: The U.S. Government’s War on Questioning and Human Reason

Another part of the government’s demonization campaign is the oppressive use of language. Terms like “conspiracy theorist” and “domestic terrorists” are invented to isolate political resistance and make the general public believe that questioning the government is an act of delusion and a crime. Calling political dissidents mentally ill and conspiracy theorists for questioning the policies and statements of the U.S. government is a trick that the Soviet Union also used against its own political dissidents. A good article to read on this subject is ‘The Psychologisation of Dissent: The Global Warming Skepticism Mental Disorder’ by Brendan O’Neill, the editor of Spiked Online. O’Neill writes:

Psychologising dissent, and refusing to recognise, much less engage with, the substance of people’s disagreements – their political objections, their rational criticisms, their desire to do things differently – is the hallmark of authoritarian regimes.

Phase Seven: Rounding Up Political Dissidents Into Concentration Camps, Disarmament, Torture, and Wiping Out The Enemies of The New Authoritarian Regime

The government threat of disarming the American people to prevent them from fighting for their freedoms is very real, but some threats cannot be carried out. Japanese Admiral Yamamoto said near the beginning of World War II that “You cannot invade America. There is a rifle behind every blade of grass.” This fact hasn’t changed in seventy years.

Phase Eight: Total Slavery For The People, Acceptance of New Government Structure, New Currency, And New Way of Life.

If all goes according to plan, America will be no more. A North American Union with a whole new political system and laws is being planned for North America, and it will then be connected with the European Union and other global bodies to form a unified and authoritarian world state.

Many people believe a new world state is necessary for humanity to survive and for the global community to prosper in these challenging times. The people who are involved in the conspiracy against America, Canada, and Mexico do not believe that they are committing evil by lying to the people and keeping the agenda for world government a secret. They honestly believe they are doing good. Obviously, they are mistaken because good deeds are transparent. Secrecy breeds corruption and tyranny. A global government controlled and owned by a ruthless and cunning private international banking establishment along with multinational corporations will be an absolute disaster for the human race, much like the Soviet Union was a disaster for Russia in the last century.

III. The Deliberate Disintegration and Destruction of America: The Five Fronts In The War Against America

There are many fronts in the globalist war against America besides the five listed below such as the biological front and the cultural front, but I believe these are the most important.

Front One: Psychological Front – Psychological Warfare

There is a concerted, deliberate, and systematic effort to psychologically condition the American people into accepting the war on terror as a justified war, and the attack on their freedoms as reasonable and good. The brainwashing of the American citizenry began long before September 11, 2001, but the neocon gang and Bush administration took it to an extreme, which has backfired against the dark establishment in Washington.

Dutch-American psychoanalyst Joost A.M. Meerloo, author of the 1956 book, “The Rape of the Mind,” wrote in a chapter called ‘The Cold War Against the Mind’ that totalitarian regimes act irrationally in order to fool their enemies, both foreign and domestic, and to keep people terrorized with panic and confusion. Meerloo:

There is another important weapon the totalitarians use in their campaign to frighten the world into submission. This is the weapon of psychological attack. Hitler kept his enemies in a state of constant confusion and diplomatic upheaval. They never knew what this unpredictable madman was going to do next. Hitler was never logical, because he knew that was what he was expected to be. Logic can be met with logic, while illogic cannot–it confuses those who think straight. The Big Lie and monotonously repeated nonsense have more emotional appeal in a cold war than logic and reason. While the enemy is still searching for a reasonable counter-argument to the first lie, the totalitarians can assault him with another. (Meerloo: ‘The Rape of The Mind’; pg. 101)

Psychological tricks and disinformation campaigns are being directed against the American people because undermining the psychological health of the American people is one of the goals of the traitors in power.

Front Two: Economic Front – Economic Warfare

Simply put, a poor population is more likely to be dependent on the government to meet the basic needs of life than a self-sufficient and wealthy population. Besides tyranny, poverty is the greatest enemy of freedom. The economic war against the American people has led to massive unemployment, housing foreclosures, homelessness, and general impoverishment. It is important to know that the economic crash in 2008 did not happen by accident but a result of government policy. And the bank bailouts were not intended to provide jobs but save the dysfunctional and corrupt banking system. America’s political and financial ruling elite is beyond ruthless. They will stop at nothing from crushing the American people and turning America into a bankrupt, poor, and miserable police state.

Front Three: Terror Front – Political Warfare

State terror and the political use of fear is common in authoritarian and unpopular regimes. A government staged terrorist attack keeps the people in a state of panic and confusion, afraid for their lives, and pleading for security from the government. What more can tyrants ask for? Using state terrorism to resolve social and political problems is a win-win-win formula. Nothing else equals the magical spell that is cast on the people through the instrument of fear.

Front Four: Illegal Immigration Front – Demographic Warfare

Immigration is good. America was built on immigration. But an excess of anything is bad. The problem with America’s immigration system today is that it has been hijacked by globalist conspirators who are using immigration as a political weapon to weaken the American people’s resolve to deal with tough economic and political issues, and to further divide the country into the rich and poor, white and Mexican, citizen and non-citizen, etc. A wise and just policy is not being taken to address the immigration problem by the establishment in Washington because they do not want to do anything about it. Their goal is to destabilize and ultimately destroy America, not protect and save it.

If Mexico’s economy was not destroyed by NAFTA and other corporatist policies that benefit a small financial and political elite in Mexico, America, and Canada then there would be more jobs for the Mexican people in Mexico and less incentive to migrate to America to work. It is important to understand that both the Mexican people and the American people are the victims in the illegal immigration crisis which is connected to the larger economic crisis.

Front Five: Media Front – Information Warfare

There is not much that needs to be said here. It is self-evident that the mass media is interested in propaganda rather than informing the people about what their government is doing in their name. I view the deliberate withholding of information that proves that America is controlled by traitors who murdered Americans on September 11, 2001 as a crime against humanity. It is the greatest betrayal of the people’s trust.

IV. The War For The Hearts And Minds of The American People

The murder of John F. Kennedy was a tragedy and a crime against humanity, but it is nothing compared to the murder of an entire nation. America is being lined up to be killed and destroyed just as JFK was on November 22, 1963.

But America is not going down without a fight. The war for the hearts and minds of the people is being fought every day. One of the great generals in the infowar is Alex Jones. People wonder why Alex Jones is angry at the U.S. government and why he is always ranting. They say Alex is eccentric and psychotic for being mad but I think this criticism is stupid, backward and crazy because anger is a natural reaction to treason and grand deception. The American people are treated like fools and cattle. Alex Jones is passionate and mad for good reason. “Passion,” said William Hazlitt, “is the essence, the chief ingredient in moral truth.”

If you are not angry then you are not informed. And when you are not informed you make it easier for tyrants to lie to you, rob you, enslave you, and kill you.
