Srinagar, Mar 18, KONS: Asserting that the Kashmir issue needed no introduction in the world “now,” the chairman of the Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, on Friday said that the peaceful Kashmir struggle was being recognised at the international level, and that non-violent movements had wrought revolutions in West Asian nations.

In his speech to the weekly congregation at the Jamia Masjid here, the Mirwaiz described the commander of the army’s 15th Corps, Lt Gen SA Hasnain’s recent statement as an attempt to malign the Kashmir movement.

“New Delhi is trying to portray the Kashmir movement in colours of militancy and infiltration,” he said.

“The government of India may find it easy to deal with militancy, but it is terrified of the peaceful movement in Kashmir. That is why it has repeatedly tried to project the Kashmir issue in the cast of militancy and infiltration,” he said.

“The world is now a global village, and events in one part have a direct impact elsewhere. People from Egypt to Libya and Tunisia to Bahrain have risen to secure their rights, and the entire world is watching how they battle state power and violence,” he said.

“In this backdrop, the long-standing Kashmir issue has emerged to the fore, and the peaceful movement here is being recognised the world over,” he said.

“It is a matter of great satisfaction that the Kashmir issue is no stranger in any world forum now, and that the international community has become fully aware of the mass movement here,” he said.

“Wherever I went, and whosever I talked to, everyone had a realization of the sentiments and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. There is complete unanimity that the voice of Kashmiris cannot be suppressed by force and power,” he said.

“People everywhere stress on resolving the Kashm ir issue. Even Israel has begun to talk in such terms,” he said.
