Bashar al-Assad, Syria's president, has promised more political freedom and the lifting of the country's emergency law. But the unrest in Syria continues.
And in what appears to be the most serious threat to his family's 40-year rule, protests have now spread from the southern city of Daraa to Damascus, Hama, Homs, Latakia and other cities.

Inside Story, with presenter Ghida Fakhry, discusses with: Malik al-Abdeh, a Syrian journalist; Andrew Tabler, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy; and Blake Hounshell, the managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine.
