German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed his opposition to his nation aiding states establish nuclear programs for peaceful purposes in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper published on Monday.

According to Steinmeier, there have been periods in the past in which Germany has agreed to aid countries establish and maintain nuclear reactors used for peaceful purposes.

However, Steinmeier made clear that he opposes the extensive distribution of nuclear technology among Arab states because of the latent danger it is associated with.

Steinmeier was asked whether he approved of an initiative from French President Nicolas Sarkozy to assist Arab states with civil nuclear power in order to retain control over its military use.

"I cannot support using nuclear power as the solution to the world's energy problems or scattering nuclear power stations over regions that lack the competence to deal with this technology and where there is insufficient certainty about political stability," Steinmeier said.
