Evidence Thin On Some U.K. Terror Suspects

Evidence is thin against some of the 25 Muslims British police detained in the alleged plot to bomb U.S.aircraft, the Chicago Tribune reports.

On Aug. 10, police conducted a coordinated sweep in and around London and Birmingham, England, to break up the plot, which they said had reached a critical stage.

So far, five suspects have been released, and five others have not yet been formally charged.

A London defense lawyer for a 17-year-old suspect who cannot be named told the newspaper police had misconstrued evidence when they charged her client with "possession of items that would be of use in terrorism."

Gareth Peirce criticized police for calling documents found in the youth's home "suicide notes" signed by other young Muslim men preparing to die.

"They're not suicide notes at all," Peirce said. "They're really simple wills. To call these suicide notes was absolutely disgraceful."

Police also seized a crude map of Afghanistan Peirce says was drawn years ago by the boy's younger brother.
