(NewsCore) - BENGHAZI, Libya -- Anti-government protesters in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi claimed they came under attack from mercenaries hired by longtime leader Col. Moamar Ghadafi, Sky News reported Saturday.
Libyan opposition groups in exile also claimed that the protests spread to new cities and towns, and security sources reported ongoing pitched battles between the army and protesters in Baida, according to Sky News.
Meanwhile, a medical source in Benghazi told AFP that 18 people were killed during anti-government demonstrations Friday.
"Eighteen people were killed on Friday in Benghazi," the source at the city's Al Jalaa Hospital said.
A Sky News source identified only as Ali added that hospital facilities were running out of blood supplies as the wounded sought medical attention.
Human Rights Watch, citing telephone interviews with local hospital staff and witnesses, said early Saturday that security forces killed at least 84 people over three days of protests.
"Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the eastern Libyan cities of Benghazi, Baida, Ajdabiya, Zawiya and Derna on February 18, 2011, following violent attacks against peaceful protests the day before that killed 20 people in Benghazi, 23 in Baida, three in Ajdabiya and three in Derna," the New York-based watchdog said. "Hospital sources told Human Rights Watch that security forces killed 35 people in Benghazi on February 18, almost all with live ammunition."
The rights group's deputy Middle East and North Africa director, Joe Stork, called on the Libyan authorities to respect the right of free assembly, saying that "Libyan authorities should allow peaceful protesters to have their say."
