Jerusalem--Palestinian militants who carry out suicide attacks against Israeli soldiers cannot be defined as terrorists, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said in an interview broadcast Tuesday.
"Somebody who is fighting against Israeli soldiers is an enemy and we will fight back, but I believe that this is not under the definition of terrorism, if the target is a soldier," Livni said in an interview on US Television Network ABC which was broadcast by Israeli Radio.
Livni's own father, Eitan, was director of operations for the Irgun, the hardline nationalist group which fought British rule through World War II.
In a later interview with Israeli Public Radio, Livni, who is also Justice Minister, said a distinction should be made between militants who attack soldiers and those who target civilians.
"We must say to the international community that terrorists who take the lives of civilians are terrorists, that you cannot Justify their motivations," she said.
"We must do everything to prevent terrorists gaining international legitimacy. Nobody can look me in the eye and tell me that a terrorist who blows himself up in a restaurant or disco or shopping centre has legitimate motives."
