Hizbullah Missiles Hamper Israeli Air Force Operations

Tel Aviv--The Israeli Air Force has been significantly hampered by Hizbullah rocket strikes on northern Israel.

Military sources said Hizbullah rockets have caused heavy damage to a major air force base at Meron, about 20 kilometers south of Lebanon.

The base contains a regional air operations center that has directed the war on Lebanon, Middle East Newsline reported.

The Hizbullah attacks have also forced the air force to relocate Israeli attack helicopters, comprising the AH-64 Apache and AH-1S Cobra.

The helicopters have played a major role in the air war in southern Lebanon and the Beirut area.

"The main factor has been the helicopters," a source said. "They have nowhere to land in northern Israel that's safe from Hizbullah rockets."

As a result, the air force has also transferred its helicopter maintenance and logistics center from northern Israel.

Over the last few days, the sources said, attack and utility helicopters were ordered to fly to a base in the Negev for service.

"We don't know how many [Hizbullah] missiles are left," Brig. Gen. Omri Tamir, head of the air force's helicopter directorate, said.

"They're concealed in basements and underneath homes. Over the last few days, the weather in Lebanon also made things difficult for us [to strike targets]."

The air force has sought to compensate for its helicopter difficulties by expanding the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for reconaissance in southern Lebanon, the sources said.

They said UAVs have flown more than 250 hours in missions in Lebanon, or 24-hour coverage by at least two platforms.

Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz said the air force employed 100 F-15s and F-16s in the war against Hizbullah. He said more than 1,400 sorties were conducted, most of them bombing missions.

"It will take time to determine the effectiveness of the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] operation in Lebanon," Halutz told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday.

"We do know, however, that we crippled Hizbullah's major transportation points and prevented them from transferring more weapons to their artillery units. We also know that we cleared out Hizbullah's major support networks."

U.S. Provides Emergency Jet Fuel To Israel

Washington--Israel has asked the United States for immediate shipments of military fuel.

On July 25, the Defense Department awarded a $22.5 million contract for diesel fuel to Israel. Under the contract, Refinery Associates of Texas would supply diesel fuel to Israel's military in a program financed by U.S. defense aid.

Officials said Israel's military requires immediate supplies of Jet and other fuel to maintain the war against Hizbullah, Middle East Newsline reported. They said the Israeli request would accelerate existing contracts.

A Pentagon announcement said the fuel would be delivered through France. The fuel was expected to arrive in israel by Monday.

Officials said the Israeli war has taken a major toll on the military's logistics and supplies. They said Israel has already requested Jet fuel for its fleet of combat aircraft.

Over the last two weeks, officials said, the United States has flown GBU-28 bunker-busting weapons to Israel through Britain. They said the effort has been coordinated with the government of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

No Hezbollah Activists In Qana

30 July 2006

Qana/Sofia--"There are no Hezbollah activists in the village of Qana, Israel is bombarding civilian buildings and vehicles," Spanish Journalist Monica Leiva, who is in the southern Lebanese village at the moment, told Focus News Agency.

"I am at the site of the bombardment at the moment. Here the people are still trying to pull the bodies out from under the ruins. At the moment they are trying to free the bodies of the children killed in the Israeli air raid.

The bombarding continues.

What more can I say? Israel is firing at everything--Buildings, roads, vehicles.

It is particularly impossible for the locals to leave the area, as there are no guarantee that they will not be fired at while trying to escape the war zone.

The people are very scared.

The air raids started during the night and continue.

There are no Hezbullah activists in Qana. There are only civilians here," the Spanish Journalist said.

Hezbollah Cannot Be Defeated
**************************************

July 28, 2006

United Nations peacekeepers fear that the Israeli Army intends to raze entire villages in south Lebanon after encountering stiffer resistance from Hezbollah guerrillas than initially expected.

With Israeli forces pulling back from a key Lebanese border town after several days of bloody fighting, UNIFIL's top commander says that Hezbollah cannot be defeated militarily.

"A military victory will never be possible," Major General Alain Pellegrini, the commander of UNIFIL, the acronym of the UN peacekeeping force deployed in south Lebanon, told The Times in an interview.

He said only a political solution can resolve the fate of Hezbollah's military wing, adding that after more than two weeks of heavy fighting, the Lebanese group is "still strong."

Israeli troops have withdrawn from Bint Jbeil, the largest Shia town in the border district, after heavy street clashes against well-entrenched Hezbollah fighters caused high casualties.

The town was under heavy shellfire today in what UN officers suspect is a plan to force the last civilians to flee prior to destroying the town completely and killing any remaining Hezbollah fighters.

"I think the Israelis are contemplating flattening villages down to the last house," Richard Morczynski, UNIFIL's political officer said.

UNIFIL estimates that there are between 800 to 1,000 Hezbollah combatants deployed throughout the south, operating in groups numbering as few as 12 to 15.

They have ready access to weapons and ammunition and have retained their channels of communication, speaking in code over walkie-talkies.

"Sometimes they use radio frequencies that are the same as ours and we can hear them talk," Mr Morczynski said.

"They say this is brother 13. We are going to carry out operation seven. Hope you are all safe."

He said that Hezbollah is showing little sign of weakening despite the intensity of the Israeli onslaught.

"They are mobile, dedicated and willing to act. When there's shelling, they're not scared. They're not sitting in bunkers," he said.

The Israeli military estimates that as many as 100 Hezbollah fighters are holed up in Bint Jbeil, a straggly hill town of narrow streets suited to the Lebanese Shia groups style of hit-and-run operations.

Eight Israeli soldiers were killed on Wednesday in a Hezbollah ambush in Bint Jbeil, the highest number of fatalities in a single day since the conflict began on July 12.

Other than the setback on the ground, the Israeli Air Force is still unable to halt the firing of rockets into Israel despite saturation air coverage over south Lebanon and a two-minute response time to the scene of a rocket launch.

Hezbollah announced today that it had fired a new rocket for the first time, the Khybar 1. Five of the new rockets were launched at Afula, 33 miles south of the border.

Two Koreas Exchange Gunfire Along Fortified Border
*******************************************************************

Tue Aug 1, 2006

Seoul (Reuters)--North and South Korean troops along their heavily fortified border exchanged gunfire for the first time in about a year, a military official said on Tuesday, with the incident coming as ties between the two have soured.

North Korean troops fired two shots at a South Korean guard post near the Demilitarized Zone on Monday night and South Korean troops returned six shots, an official said by telephone.

"No one was injured in the incident" the Joint Chiefs of Staff official said.

...The last time there was an exchange of gun fire along the DMZ was in October 2005, the official said, when North Korea fired a bullet towards a South Korean guard post and the South returned fire.

The navies of the two had a major clash along a disputed maritime border in 2002, resulting in deaths and casualties on both sides.

...North Korea has stationed most of its 1.2 million-man army near the DMZ, South Korea has more than 650,000 troops, who are supported by about 30,000 U.S. troops.
